By exploring fundamental chemistry approaches based on synthesis, assembly, characterisation and modelling, we will develop candidate metastable-active units (“metaphores”), understand their properties, optimise the metastable states, develop applications in both optical and mechanical switching and implement these functional materials in prototype devices.

Our project aims to develop a new class of functional materials in which long-lived metastable states are the key to introducing and switching the desired functionality.
